                                          Established in 2016,?The Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation (CSOR)?is an academic research center within the?Shields School of Business at Saint Francis University. The Center's mission is to provide information to citizens, policy makers, and other researchers about the extent, scope, and effects of occupational regulation.?Located on the 3rd floor of the newly renovated?Schwab Hall, the center offers students who are interested in economics and public policy a substantial scholarship opportunity.

                                            Maria - Research Affiliate(4)Dr. Maria Koumenta -- Senior Research Affiliate

                                            Maria Koumenta is an Assistant Professor of Labor Economics at Queen Mary, University of London. She is an expert on occupational regulation, currently leading the research on this topic in the EU and UK. Her work explores the characteristics and prevalence of occupational regulation, analyses its impact on labour market outcomes such as earnings, skills, employment, migration and service quality. She has led various projects funded by the UK government and the European Commission and has provided testimony and policy advice to various UK government departments (UK Treasury, Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Policy, Department of Health), UK Parliamentary Committees, and officials at the European Commission.

                                            She was awarded her PhD from the London School of Economics, where she also worked as a researcher at the Centre for Economic Performance.

                                            Brian Meehan

                                            Dr. Brian Meehan

                                            Dr. Brian Meehan is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Berry College.?Brian earned his PhD in economics from Florida State University. He earned his MA in economics from Central Michigan University and his BS in economics from Northern Michigan University. His?research interests include law and economics, occupational licensing, and public choice. He has published in academic journals including:?Public Choice,?The International Review of Law and Economics,?and?Applied Economics. Much of his work focuses on the impact of occupational licensing on labor markets and crime. He has also published policy reports on occupational licensing for the Archbridge Institute?and an op-ed appearing in The Hill.

                                            Dr. Darwyyn Deyo

                                            Darwyyn Deyo is an Assistant Professor of Economics at San Jose State University who teaches law and economics and labor economics. She is also an Affiliate Research Fellow with the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute. She has researched the impact of occupational licensing on service quality, the labor supply of criminals, and topics in health economics such as the impact of tort reform and the Affordable Care Act on health care utilization. She has published in such journals as the Journal of Private Enterprise, the Journal of Economics and Finance Education, the American Journal of Managed Care, and the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

                                            She earned a Doctorate in Economics and a Masters in Economics from George Mason University. She is also an alumni of Saint Mary’s College of California where she earned a dual Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in International Area Studies. She previously worked as a Research Fellow with the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute and was an affiliate scholar with the Center for Micro-Economic Policy Research at George Mason University. Before beginning her doctorate, she worked as a journalist covering political news out of Pennsylvania. She is also co-founder of the Finance and Economics Women’s Network, which supports undergraduate students in those disciplines.

                                            Alicia Plemmons(2)Dr. Alicia Plemmons

                                            Dr.?Alicia Plemmons is an Assistant Professor in the Economics & Finance Department at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her research uses applied spatial and econometric methods to understand how policy changes affect labor markets. She studies how to create environments that facilitate healthy economic growth and business development through research that seeks to understand the motivations that determine entry, operating, and exit decisions of firms, laborers, and consumers. She compliments her empirical background with the use of technology-driven techniques such as large-scale data scraping, geographic information systems, and predictive machine learning.

                                            Alexis?DeLullo

                                            Graduate Degree Program: Masters in Business Administration (MBA)?

                                            Lexie is from Saint Marys, Pennsylvania. She is a recent graduate of Saint Francis University, where she obtained both a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science in Finance. While attending Saint Francis University, she was the Lead Research Fellow for The Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation and the Project Manager for Enactus. During her junior year, she was awarded the Lynanne Wingard Award, which is presented to one student who represents the campus through strong academics and campus involvement.

                                            IlyaIlya Kukaev

                                            Ph.D Student - Economics

                                            Ilya Kukaev is a PhD student in Economics at Lehigh University. He was a Fulbright scholar from Russia. Ilya's research areas are Macroeconomics and Labor Economics. He's interested in effects of occupational licensing on labor markets and macroeconomic outcomes. In particular, his research covers how occupational licensing affects unemployment duration, inter-generational mobility, and labor mobility. The occupational regulation system in Russia is another topic of his research. In his free time he enjoys ice-skating, jogging, and going to the cinema.??

                                            Ryan graduated from Central Bucks High West. He currently serves as the class of 2021 Vice President and plays on the SFU Division I Men's Volleyball Team. Ryan is a member of the Honors Program, CSOR, Enactus, Troubadour (School Paper) and the Gaming Club. You may find Ryan in disguise at times as the school’s mascot Frankie the Friar.

After graduation, she plans to move back to Europe and pursue a career in marketing and communications.

                                              CSOR and Shields School of Business Travel to NYC

                                              CSOR team members,?Shields School of Business faculty, and 21 students within the Shields School of Business traveled to New York City from Thursday 2/20 to Saturday 2/22 to take an exclusive guided tour of the New York Stock Exchange and connect with SFU alumni.

                                              The students also had the opportunity to meet Chris Conroy, Class of 1984 and Senior Vice President of Wealth Management at UBS Financial, and Caleb Brantner, Class of 2014 and Senior Associate at the Citadel.

                                              The trip was funded by the Dr. Albert A Zanzuccki Chair in Business Administration.

Gibson (right) throughout the summer in conducting research on her poster topic: Assessing the Effects of Occupational Licensing Regulation on Optician Dispensing Growth Rates Across the U.S.?

                                              CSOR's Veteran Survey Goes Live

                                              The Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation transitions into year two of the PA project with the U.S. Department of Labor, studying the effects occupational licensing has on veteran and military spouses.

                                              In order to access and gather data, the Center developed an IRB-approved survey. The goal of the survey is to help the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania distinguish the needs of servicemen and servicewomen, and their spouses, as it pertains to occupational licensing.?

                                              The survey will be distributed throughout the Commonwealth, asking questions to determine any barriers of employment for veterans and military spouses. After the completion of the survey, an academic and impartial recommendation will be made.?

The Auditor General DePasquale hosted the open forum at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.?

                                              10th Annual Poster Session

                                              The Shields School of Business at Saint Francis University held the Dr. Albert Zanzuccki Endowed Chair 10th Annual Spring Poster Session on April 15, 2019. Twenty undergraduates and graduate students presented academic research at this year's event, six of which were CSOR members. Students conducted and presented innovative research on topics related to business, marketing analytics, human resources and economics for the Saint Francis community to enjoy.?

                                              This poster session, organized by Emily Vargo, Director of Policy Research and Academic Programs for CSOR, had the highest student participation rate in its 10 years.??

                                            • CSOR Receives VALLO Grant to Help Veterans Earn Degrees

                                              The Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation has received a 3-year, 1 million dollar grant under the Veteran's Accelerated Learning for Licensed Occupations (VALLO). The grant will allow Saint Francis University to launch the Veterans Acceleration Learning Program (VALP). The VALLO grant, and the previously awarded 3-year DOL project, will allow CSOR to better examine and spread research of military portability, skill set?transferring, and the demographic data of PA licenses.?
